Female play groups tend to be smaller, involving more intimacy and verbal sharing, compared to those of males which tend to be bigger, involving more active, competitive activities (Maccoby, 1998). The behaviors and social skills associated with social acceptance vs. rejection also differ for males and females (LaGreca, 1981). In particular, males are more likely to display aggressive behaviors than are females and aggression is seen as more normative for males than females at this age (Cook, 1992; Eagly & Steffen, 1986).
