1 Preparation
• Ascertain who the learners will be and their current knowledge.
• Clearly describe the task.
• Break the task down into stages and key points. Stages emphasise what has to be done and in what sequence. Key points emphasise how the stages are to be done and why they have to be done in a certain way as well as any safety requirements.
• Decide what equipment and time is required for the session.
2 Conducting the Session
Introduction
• Create interest in learning
• Put the employee at ease
• Overview – explain the topic they are going to learn and show the finished product.
• Clearly describe the task
• Motivate – explain why the acquisition of the skill is important to them.
• Check current knowledge.
Demonstration
• Demonstrate at normal pace.
• Show and tell – go through using the breakdown sheet and explaining each
stage and key point.
• Check for understanding – go through the stages again asking for input from the employee on stages and reasons for key points. Ask different employees.
Practice
• Practice by employees. Allow trainees sufficient time to practice. This should take up at least 50% of the session time. Supervise and assist during this practice period. Also assess the trainee against the competency standards and provide feedback on performance.
Conclusion
• Briefly review the steps and key points using the employees to recall the information.
• Give encouragement/praise as appropriate.
• Review standards.
• Give an idea of future uses of the skill.
