In the late 1980s, PRI contracted with several Middle Eastern countries to publish telephone and business directories. PRI sent four British employees to Saudi Arabia to begin the work. One of these employees was Angela Clarke, PRI's editor and researcher (and a single woman). Clarke met with much resistance because of Middle Eastern views of women, despite the fact that she made several attempts to conform to the cultural expectations, including wearing plain skirts, long-sleeves blouses, and a wedding ring. Ultimately, these measures were insufficient, and PRI replaced her with a male salesperson, although he was not qualified to conduct the necessary research.
