Vocabulary in Making Connections
Back et it. (2002). suggest that words can be categorized into three groups.
On one extreme are high frquency words that most children of given age probably already know.
on the other extreme are low-frequency words.
Back et al. Suggest that vocabulary instruction is most productive when teacher select what Stahl and Stahl (2004) have termed "goldilocks words" those that fall between the two extreams and likely to be encountered in different contexts.
The texts created for Making Connections contain a rich assortment of such words and sufficient context clues for children to infer their meanings.
