This wood is also known as Indian ebony (its name comes from the port city of Makassar on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi). It has long dark chocolate stripes on light brown background.
Its tonal and mechanical properties, as well as its silky surface, is similar to ebony. Both feature unique Sustain, crisp attack, bright tone, unusual stiffness and abrasion resistance.
Generally used for fingerboards, but thanks to its high aesthetic value frequently used for front boards of acoustic, electric and bass guitars
