One of the major
environmental concerns is water pollution from nitrogen in animal manure because of
the concentration of animals and a limited land base for disposal. Zebarth et al. [20] found
that there was a large increase in nitrogen surplus in an aquifer in this region resulting from
changes in land-use. Agricultural intensification has also given rise to wildlife concerns in
the region. The use of land for non-traditional (read non-soil-based) but intensive
agricultural systems such as greenhouses and livestock facilities pose challenges for the
co-existence of agriculture and wildlife [4].
