If we were as interested in discovering irregularities in our experience as we are in regularities,
the task would be much easier.
Some rocks are hard and some soft,
some heavy and some light.
Some rains are helpful,
some ruinous.
Some people are tall, some short.
If all experiences were like this,
we would not know what to expect next:
each new situation would confront us as if no past situations had ever occurred,
and years of experience would give us no hint about the way future events would occur.
But nature is not like this;
nature does contain regularities,
difficult though they sometimes are to find
