Social media facilitate the harnessing of the power of people who have similar ideas by disseminating information quickly and broadly on a network. Regarding social movements, which are defined as ‘an effort by a large number of people to solve collectively a problem that they feel they have in common’ (Toch, 1965, 2014, p. 5), social media take the role of mediating users’ interaction as a method of engaging and empowering people. Contrary to the traditional mobilization that combines individuals’ resources to establish collective power through social movement organizations, the diverse voices can be effectively collectivized and transmitted to the society on social media. In this aspect, social media are considered to be providing an effective method for diffusing information and involving new volunteers in social movements (Gonz alez- Bailon et al., 2011).
