Summative assessments present conclusions about the merit or worth of student performances. These traditional, teacher-made tests determine if, and to what degree, students have mastered a set of skills or body of knowledge. Major tests like midterm exams, final exams, six-week or eight-week exams, and unit exams are all summative assessments. They should be reliable, replicable, equitable for all students, systemic, interpretable, and comparable across classes and schools (Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation, 2003; National Research Council, 2000; Popham, 2001; Tucker & Stronge, 2005).
