A. OBJECTIVES OF MUSIC EDUCATION
A great deal has been written about goals and objectives in music education. Unfortunately, much of this literary effort has failed to emphasize viable reasons for teaching music. Primary justification
frequently been based upon extra-musical objectives such as development Of mental discipline, promoting good citizenship, worthy use of leisure time, and the like. The major difficulty in applying these to music education is that mathematics, English, and other subject areas can also lay claim to these objectives; in fact, it can be argued that many other subjects fulfill such objectives far more effectively than music does. Furthermore, the proportionately higher cost of music instruction in comparison with other subject areas makes the justification of music even more difficult.
