2016 has brought some significant changes to GFCO. We are undergoing the ISO 17065 certification as a certification body. As we have been preparing all of the documentation for the application and audit, several items have been amended and clarified in our policies and standards to ensure improved impartiality in our certification of gluten-free goods.
In 10 years of service, GFCO has never implemented or passed along a price increase. In an effort to stay competitive, you will notice some pricing changes in 2016 pertaining to our inspection fees and new certification rates. Because of the new changes, we will be reviewing everyone's certification fee over the course of 2016 to align them with the new rate chart and issue new contracts to every company whether you've been GFCO Certified for 10 years or 2 months. The new contract will outline more clearly the standard every GFCO company is required to adhere to along with ensuring that all information in contracts (testing requirements, manufacturing facilities, etc.) is up-to-date for each company.
You'll be seeing our GFCO auditors more frequently in 2016 and moving forward. Our updated standards require at least 2 regular visits of any mixed use facility or gf facility that meets the high risk thresholds.
We are very excited to announce that our database upgrades are nearly complete! This means the live search will be back up on the website for certified products and each GFCO company will receive information to create a login account to be able to securely service your own updates, download certificates, etc. Stay tuned in early spring for the invitation!
GFCO is reviewing and evaluating our current protocols used for oats, based on new research, that are either produced or processed to be gluten-free. GFCO currently recommends the use of oats grown under what has been described as a "purity protocol", indicating that the seed stock has been examined for the presence of other grains, and that the mill has contracts with growers that require that the oat fields have not been used for gluten-containing grains for a certain number of years, that surrounding fields are not growing gluten-containing grains, that field rogueing is occurring to remove non-oat plants, and that dedicated equipment is used for sowing, harvesting, cleaning and transport. Over the next few months, GFCO will be conducting studies to evaluate the safety of oats grown under these protocols as well as oats that have been mechanically and/or optically sorted. Based on the results of these studies, GFCO will make a decision on whether to continue to allow the use of oats prepared by either of these methods in certified products.
In the midst of our growth and updates, our staff has also changed in the past 12 months. Below, you will find a comprehensive list of contacts at GFCO and GIG that you will need.
Each company now has a Customer Service team, comprised of a Customer Service Representative and a dedicated Data Processor. We've divided the companies as follows: If your company name begins with A-L, your CS team is Brooke Laurent and Kaylee Hance. If your company name begins with M-Z, your team is CJ West and Sarah Bottorf.
