In the tissue culture of explants, somatic embryogenesis is generally considered
to originate from a single cell. Like somatic embryogenesis, mutation is also a unicellular
event. Through the combined use of mutagenesis and plant tissue culture (especially plant
regeneration via embryogenesis), chimerism of mutants can be avoided (Hong et al., 2003).
Therefore, the combined application of mutagenesis and tissue culture is recognized as a
valuable approach in crop breeding (Gao, 1992; Patade and Suprasanna, 2009).
