One of the most important areas for a nurse to focus on post-operative is the vital signs. Abnormal parameters that require further evaluation is hypotension, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fever greater than 101 F. Vital signs should be monitored until stable and per hospital protocol. Vital sing along with fluid and electrolyte balance may be the first indicators that the patient is hemorrhaging. Most gynecologic oncology patients come for the operating room with a foley catheter, which usually stays in place 12-24 hours. For the first initial 12-24 hours, the urine output is carefully monitored post-operatively and checked at the end of each shift to make sure the patient has urinated at least 30cc/hr.
