Organisational structure
There are currently two Ombudsmen, Dame Beverley Wakem and Professor Ron Paterson (learn more about them here). They are supported by two Deputy Ombudsmen, Leo Donnelly and Bridget Hewson, a General Counsel, John Pohl and 68 staff divided into 13 teams located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Our Intake and Assessment Team is headed by a Manager, Priti Patel, and is responsible for receiving and assessing complaints and enquiries.
Our Early Assistance and Early Resolution Teams, are responsible for handling the large number of complaints and enquiries that can be addressed without a formal investigation. Our Early Assistance Team is headed by a Manager, Anthony Ilott. Our Early Resolution Team is headed by a Manager, Janis Adair.
We also have Investigation and Resolution Teams in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which are responsible for assisting the Ombudsmen with their investigations, or otherwise resolving complaints. Our Auckland team is headed by a Manager, Tinus Schutte. Our Christchurch team is headed by a Manager, Letitia Parry. Our Wellington team is headed by a Manager, Diana Pickard.
Our COTA Team, is headed by Inspector, Jacki Jones, and is responsible for assisting the Ombudsmen to carry out their function of monitoring places of detention under the Crimes of Torture Act.
Our Investigations and Inspections teams are complemented and supported by teams that comprise the Strategic Services Group, headed by Deputy Ombudsman Bridget Hewson. These teams provide support in the areas of human resources, information management, information and communication technology as well as advise on wider administrative improvement investigations and policy and professional practice initiatives.
Our Policy and Professional Practice Advisory Group comprises Principal Advisors responsible for providing internal and external advice, guidance and training on policy and professional practice matters, as well as international relations, knowledge management, research, and the Ombudsman's communications including their resources and publications and outreach activities.
Our Wider Administrative Improvement investigations are lead by a Principal Advisor who is responsible for assessing and scoping opportunities for investigations aimed at achieving wider administrative improvements.
Our operations are supported by a Finance and Business Services Team, headed by Finance and Business Services Manager, Meaw-Fong Phang. The team is responsible for providing support in the areas of finance, procurement, property, buildings and asset management as well as general business support services.
