Alvin York was a mountain man who hated war.Yet a few busy minutes,he killed more than 20 enemy soldiers. At the same time, he took 132 prisoners. This act has been called the greatest thing done by any one soldier in World War one.
York was 30 years old when news of the war began to come into his mountain valley . He wanted none of it.His church people thought it was wrong to kill.


But after a time,York began to think that sometimes war could be right. So before long he was in the Army.
In October 1918, York and his company were dug in along a road in France. Nests German machine guns kept the Americans from going on. York was part of a patrol of 17 men sent out to quiet the German guns.
Seeing two German with Red Cross bands on their arms,the 17 Americans followed them. The scared German ran straight to their command post. Only six Americans had been killed and three wounded. On the march back to the American lines, the German soldiers again made a cover for the Americans.

For this act York got many medals – among them. The Medal of Honor. He came home from the war a hero.
He was a hero who kept his feet on the ground. He was also a good friend to his mountain neighbors. With his help, they built new schools and good roads. Today a school, where his own children went, bears his name.
