A limitation concerning the entire sample from the youth@hordaland-survey is the use of school hours to complete the
questionnaire. Although all adolescents between the ages of 16 and 19, as well as all students in upper secondary school in
Hordaland, received information on how to participate in the study, the majority of the respondents answered the questionnaire
during school hours. Adolescents who attend school are therefore likely to be overrepresented in the sample,
compared to youth who do not attend school. Previous studies of adolescents who were internationally adopted have found
higher rates of problem behaviors when using parent reports compared to self-report (Keyes et al., 2008; Versluis-den
Bieman & Verhulst, 1995). However, as we found larger differences using self-report than previous studies found when
using parents' reports, it does not seem like the adoptees are underreporting their potential difficulties. It is important to note
that the participants were not given diagnostic interviews. Therefore, the findings are limited to symptoms of mental health
problems and there is no information on whether these symptoms meet the criteria for specific diagnoses.
