One of the functions of
Parkin is to ubiquitinate Parkin interacting substrate (PARIS) that is
then subjected to proteasomal degradation. The activity of Parkin is
reduced by ROS allowing PARIS to accumulate and enter the nucleus
where it acts as a potent repressor of peroxisomeproliferator-
activated receptor g (PPARg) coactivator-1a (PGC-1a),
which can regulate a number of different processes.
