The fact that Eastern carrots differ in compound composition from Western type has been also recently shown for other
constituents. The comparison of 118 carrot accessions showed that European and American accessions (presumably mostly belonging toWestern gene pool) had about 18 % more sugars than Asian accessions (presumably mostly belonging to Eastern gene pool) and the difference was observed for advanced cultivars as well as for landraces, and also when only
orange rooted accessions were compared. Also, European orange accessions were richer in carotenoids than those originating from Asia by 25 %.Moreover, advanced cultivars had more carotenoids than landraces that demonstrates quantitative changes in chemical composition as a result of breeding progress [2].
