Normally, two different types can be distinguished to increase external insulation during a renovation: a thermal composite system and a cladding with air circulation. A thermal composite system means that the insulation material is attached to the wall and coated with a final layer [32]. A cladding with air circulation consists of insulation material, an air gap of approx. 3 cm and a weather proof layer (wood, metal sheets, ceramic plates etc.). Wood covered external insulation is commonly used in the Northern European countries (32) However, Ireland has more rain during a year, if wood covered external insulation is selected, the building will lose its aesthetic several years later. Therefore, a thermal composite system was considered and evaluated at the beginning.
