Although Piaget's theories tended to focus primarily on the development of the individual while ignoring the greater socio-cultural context, the roots of constructivism are clearly present in Piaget's focus on the active role of the individual in learning: "… all knowledge is tied to action, and knowing an object or an
event is to use it by assimilating it to an action scheme…" Piaget, 1967, pp. 14-15). For Piaget, knowledge construction takes place when new knowledge is actively assimilated and accommodated into existing knowledge.
