The initial manifestation of cold–wet injury is the presence of lesions
on the dorsal surfaces of the hands and feet. This superficial injury represents
damage to superficial blood vessels, resulting in local edema and inflammation.
Features of this condition include redness, swelling, itching, and soreness. In
worsening cases, chilbains can progress to more severe blisters or ulcers, and
it may be months to years before the symptoms subside.
