In many developing
countries there is an obvious lack of adequate institutional structures
and their ability to govern the production and sale of pesticides is
limited, and some have even pointed to an interaction between ‘bureaucratic
quality’ (assessedwith a suite of indicators) and the influence of the
pesticide industry (Marcoux and Urpelainen, 2011); poorer bureaucratic
quality tends to provide opportunities for greater influence fromthe pesticide
industry. This is a field that requires further research, especially in
developing countries, as there are still many gaps in our knowledge.
This paper presents the results of a research project designed to explore
the use of pesticides by farmers in Oman, a part of the world where
there is a dearth of knowledge regarding the use of this technology.
