Gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a short-chained organic
acid found endogenously in the brains of mammals, where it is
synthesized from the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid
[1]. GHB is a powerful central nervous system depressant that has
been used legally as an anesthetic agent, and has been employed in
the treatment of alcohol dependence and narcolepsy [2]. Although
GHB has been known since its first synthesis in 1874 [3], it was Dr.
Henri Laborit who initiated research with GHB in humans, where
primarily he was studying the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma
aminobutyric acid) [4]. From these early beginnings, GHB has
gained widespread illicit use. Due to its stimulatory and euphoric
effects when ingested at relatively low doses, it is known to be a
popular club drug. GHB is often referred to as “Liquid Ecstasy”. This
drug also induces short-term anterograde amnesia, and increases
libido; undoubtedly contributing to the use of GHB in drug facilitated
crimes (DFC [5,6]). GHB is alleged to increase growth hormone
excretion [7], it also has been abused by bodybuilders as an alternative
to steroids [8]. Because of its powerful effects on psychomotor
performance, GHB also severely impairs driving ability
