The government says it is preparing to evacuate two Thai students from violence-plagued Yemen and has offered help to citizens of other Asean nations who are trapped in the country.
Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn, also the deputy prime minister, said the Thai embassy in Oman, which also covers Yemen, has arranged the evacuation of Thai students who want to return home.
Thai authorities are also working to help evacuate more Asean citizens. Some Asean member nations do not have diplomatic missions which can help citizens stuck in Yemen.
"We are adhering to the previous evacuation plan we carried out during the crisis in Libya last year and an operation centre has been set up at the consular affairs department for this mission," he said.
The ministry earlier said two students residing in Yemen's capital, Sana'a, had asked to leave the area immediately.
Their requests came as a Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes against Shia Houthi rebels in several areas, including Sana'a and Aden, the southern port city about 400km from the capital.
Around 250 Thai students are currently in Yemen and were warned to stay away from areas where fighting is ongoing.
