2.4. Solvent extracts and qualitative pharmacological analysis
All solvent extracts were taken from leaves and fruit of Pittosporum angustifolium, voucher reference N.J.Sadgrove166 (NS166). Approximately 10 g of leaf or 20 g of fruit were diced or crushed then soaked in 40 ml hexane, dichloromethane, methanol
or H2O for 30 h Extracts were then strained, evaporated in a fume hood and dried material was weighed, transferred into a tube for storage and stored in a freezer. Water extracts were frozen at three separate concentrations; the first being immediately after extraction (X1),the second after concentration to approximately
10% of its original volume using a rotor vacuum pump over a water bath at 40 C, and the third being evaporation to complete dryness.
A series of qualitative pharmacological tests were completed according to the method used by Vesoul and Cock(2011).
