The hypothesis proposed based on those results is that the case with an adiabatic lapse rate corresponds to a metastableequilibrium state restricted by passive forces represented as the slowness of heat conduction and radiative heat transfercompared to turbulent heat diffusion on the relevant time scale. If those passive forces are not restricting the system, i.e.on longer time scales when turbulent heat diffusion may have slowed down, the system will approach the second ultimateequilibrium state with an isothermal lapse rate
