BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thailand's growing demand for salmon has caught the attention of international suppliers prompting some exporters to expand their presence in the county.
At this year's Thaifex Expo in Bangkok, Jon Steenslid of the Norwegian Seafood Council said he has seen a noticeable rise in salmon consumption in Thailand, which convinced several Norwegian companies to attend the Expo for the first time this year.
Steenslid said that previously Thailand typically imported frozen salmon that was reprocessed and exported.
Recently, however, fresh salmon exports from Norway into Thailand surpassed frozen product which "indicates a rise in domestic consumption".
Between 2014 and 2015 Steenslid said there was an 83% increase in the export of fresh salmon to Thailand from Norway.
