surface of the burning liquid or because it was swept upwards by the rising plume of combustion products. However, a monitor delivering 23 m3/min (5000 gall/min) of foam extinguished the fire in ten minutes. Nobody was injured. The hydrocarbon (flash point 45°C) was unconverted raw material recovered from a product by distillation and was contaminated with 0.5% of a more volatile liquid which lowered the flash point to near ambient. The contaminant had a high conductivity. The tank was being used on balance, liquid being added to the tank and withdrawn for recycling at about the same rate (2 m3/h).
