Purpose of the Study
This study describes the evaluation of principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia in
three ways: First, by examining the principal evaluation documents from the 132 school
divisions in the state; second, by conducting a survey of the human resource directors in each
division to gather demographic and other data about the assessment practices that are currently
being used by divisions; and third, by gathering data for the human resource directors on how
principals are recognized for outstanding performance, or supported if they need improvement.
