Propidium iodide (PI), a fluorescent molecule, is membrane impermeable and can bind to DNA by intercalating between thebases with little or no sequence preference. Therefore, PI canbe used to evaluate the plasma membrane integrity. In Fig. 4 a,some NaHCO3-treated P. expansum spores released strong red fluorescence in fluorescence field, which indicated that the plasma membranes of these spores were markedly damaged and the cells became permeable to the membrane-impermeant dye PI.
