Discussion with experts Experts were regarded
by the participants as the most accessible resource
for advice or referral. However, participants’
approach to managing patients with APTBBs did
not reflect the advice or practice of the experts
they consulted. Instead, participants’ knowledge
and clinical competence remained static, which
tends to refute Gillespie and Paterson’s (2009)
suggestion that experts can increase their colleagues’
competence and responsibility. Moreover, most burn
experts are trainee doctors in their foundation years
or specialist registrars being guided by senior staff,
and the advice they give to ENPs and NPs is itself
based on personal experience rather than evidence.
