Lesson SEN 9
Task: Jog or run.
Prerequisites: SEN 7, SOC 32
Concept: With the assumption that basic coordinated walking can take place (see prerequisite SEN 7), this activity seeks to quicken the pace of walking until jogging or running results. Care must be taken in teaching this task, because the potential for falling and injury is greater than with walking. The basic concept of this lesson is to provide physical support and gradually reduce that support until none is needed. Although clapping hands to a moderate beat is a listed prerequisite (SOC 32), this ability is not critical.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to run or jog, the student will perform that task successfully to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Various pieces of music that are perceived to be of interest to the student. The shoes the student is wearing should be appropriate for this activity.
Task Analysis:
1. In the presence of a walking-pace piece of music, physically assist the student in walking to that beat around the room. Reduce physical guidance until the student can maintain the rhythm independently.
2. Modify the music to a faster beat and again provide physical guidance as needed. Reduce guidance until no longer necessary.
3. Transfer the learning situation from the class setting to an outdoor area with-out the use of music. Run alongside of the student to ensure safety and physical guidance as needed.
4. Continue Step 3, adding the verbal prompt of asking the student to jog or run before beginning the activity.
