Why rural development?
•In India, population living in rural area was 89% in 1901, 83% in 1951, 80% in 1971, 74% in 1991, and 72% in 2001. In 2007, more than 742 million of its people living in rural areas with agriculture as their main occupation. These people contribute to only 18 percent of its GDP.
•Although changing towards more and more industrialization and urbanization, Thailand can still be referred to as an agricultural country considering almost half of its workforce (42.1% in 2012) remains in agricultural sector in rural areas. Yet, agriculture contribute to only 8.2% of its GDP.
•Thus, no strategy of socio-economic development for both India and Thailand that neglects rural people and agriculture and be successful.
