is observed in its center. Ultrastructure of anagen hair follicle at the
level where the inner root sheath (IRS) is completely keratinized
showed multiple LS and lamellar granules (LG). Multitudes of LS
and IL are observed between the keratinized cells in IRS. The IHL in
the hair follicle may regard as hair barrier to be similar to the
epidermal lipid layer functioning as skin barrier [16].
Intercellular lipids are synthesized and stored in granules that are
known as LG, which are extruded into the extracellular space in the
upper granular layer during cornification [17]. In human hair follicle,
LG are mainly positioned in the vicinity of the lipid multilayer in
keratinized cells (Fig. 3). The globular particle exists in intercellular
space during the development of hair cuticles and moves to an
external area, forming the continuation of the LS [18]. The LS outside
the hair cuticle is formed with the rupture of membrane outside the
hair cuticle, and paired new LS, assumed to be IHL, is formed to fill
the space outside the hair cuticle and between IRS cuticles [19].
When IRS cuticle and hair cuticle separate from each other, the LS on
one side covers the outer surface of the hair cuticle and that on the
other side is positioned on the surface of IRS cuticle. There have been
studies on the IHL between hair cuticles in hair; it has been known to
be present as a cell membrane complex (CMC) composed of a d layer,core structure relatively light stained, covered with two b layers in
sandwich form [20].
