nella (18) and has been used by Welkos et al.
(19) for the presumptive identification of Salmonella.
The 0-1 phage was excellent for inhibiting
fermentation of dulcitol by pure cultures
of Salmonella at the level of 109 plaque-forming
units to an inoculum of 106 to 107 Salmonella
per reaction flask. However, even when 1012
plaque-forming units of phage were added to
mixed cultures found positive for Salmonella,
no inhibition of dulcitol fermentation was observed.
This was probably caused by nonselective
adsorption of the phage particles to other
bacteria.
