The first part of the objectives resulted in 1984 in a detailed document
describing floristic and faunistic aspects, as well as the scope of human
activities in the area [Guillaumet et al. 1984].
Parallel to this scientifically inspired effort the Ministry of Planning
organised a soil survey that covered the complete South-west area. The final
report that appeared in 1967, and was reprinted in 1968, received much less
attention in spite of the fact that this survey produced important conclusions
and recommendations concerning the development potential of the area
[Anon. 1968].
