School director directs traffic
Every weekday afternoon between 4 and 5pm, motorists passing Prataungtipvittaya school in Bangkok's Sai Mai district are likely to see a middle-aged woman next to the road.
She will be wearing white gloves and she will be moving around with great energy directing traffic.
Her name is Saree Suphan and she is the director of the school.
There is heavy traffic in the area, she explains, since several schools end their day at about the same time.
There are also very few traffic police available, so she has volunteered to help.
She has now become famous after a video was posted online and Channel 3's morning news show visited her school "I don't want fame," she said. "I've been directing traffic for two years and never thought that someone would see me, record it and post it online.
"I want those who have seen my video clip to have a social conscience and volunteer to work in the communities where they grew up or live."
"I realised that if I just left one Sai Mai traffic policeman to work alone in the area, the constant traffic congestion would remain. That's why I decided to come out of the school to direct traffic, alongside some of our male teachers," she said.
"If I want them (motorists) to stop to allow students and people to cross the road, I give them a wai and bow my head every time," she said.
