applications generates concern about efficacy
and safety. Indeed, there are features and properties
still unknown and undefined that must
be investigated.
Nanotechnology applications have been realized
in sunscreens, emollients, topical medications,
and diagnostic imaging for the
maintenance of skin health, as well as for the
diagnosis and management of skin diseases.
In this review, we describe the current and
potential applications of nanotechnology in dermatology.
Skin Structure and Function
Skin barrier functions as a first-line defense
against physical injuries, bacteria, viruses, allergens,
and also as protection against dehydration.
Therefore, its structural integrity and its
physiologic features are necessary for maintaining
its protective role. During terminal differentiation,
the epidermis, representing the
outermost layer of the skin, shows different features
reflecting several structural keratinocyte
modifications such as cornified cell envelope
