In last Monday, the professor gave us a change to learn about Traditional Thai food. Even I’m Thai but I do never know how to make this menu and I’m never taste it before but I know how it look like. The dish that I’m talking about is Royal Thai Summer or we well-known in named Khao Chae.
Khao chae was made and consumed in summer. It’s started by Mon people. They prepared this dish to pray worship to the monks during Songkran Festival.
There are the side dishes that serve with Khao Chae.
1. Ka Pi ball (ลูกกะปิ) it made from shrimp paste mixed with wild ginger, shallots, garlic and palm sugar and then deep-fried to perfection.
2. Stuffed sweet peppers (พริกหยวกสอดไส้หมู) the peppers are stuffed with pork and wrapped with fried eggs.
3. Shredded sweetened pork (หมูฝอย) the pork is ripped into stands and seasoning with sugar and fish sauce.
4. Stir-fried sweet pickled Chinese turnips with egg s (ไชโป๊ผัดไข่)
5. Fruits and herbs such as raw mango, cucumber, wild ginger, chilies and spring onions
Next, I would like to present about how to eat this dish. Many people may not know how to eat correctly. For the first time I thought we can eat by mixed everything into the boiled rice but it wrong if you want to taste follow the traditional. First, you should take a bite of the side dish, chew a bit slowly and follow by fruits or herbs and then follow with rice without water.
And then I would like to share my experience about Traditional Thai Food Demonstration class. I’m really excited because I quite like cooking and I am the person who loves eating. It’s a good change for me to learn how to make this dish. And I was excited because I never eaten before. Khao Chae is the dish that we need to attention because it has a lot of steps to cooking and a lot of material. The lecturer told me that don’t worried about the taste so much and please enjoy with them.
After we finish cooking, I think the most of side dishes are sweet and a little salt. I think it’s a new thing that we should learn and try to eat. I think we not only learned about how to make it but also learn about the culture.
