e. They are evidence of the very diversity that pluralism
values. Each also encompasses the fundamental essence of tolerance: that
is, to respect the rights of others – ‘the different’ – to be who they are, to
refrain from harm because harming ‘the other’ means harm to all and to
the self. In tolerance, there is the intuition of the unity and interdependence
of humanity, a unity and interdependence that the ecological age has taught
us to see as encompassing all humankind and the whole planet, and this
has facilitated a holistic view of the world and education that informs the
approaches to teaching for tolerance advocated here.
