The experiment was set in 4 treatments with 3 replicates. The
4 treatments were wastewater (control), wastewater þ soil,
wastewater þ soil þ N. nucifera, and wastewater þ soil þ
C. alternifolius. The wastewater samples were collected and the pH,
total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total dissolved
solids (TDS), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were analyzed by
conventional methods for the experiments of water and wastewater
(APHA-AWWA-WEF,1998). Thewaterwas added to maintain
a constant volume despite evaporation before wastewater samples
were collected. The samples were collected on day 0, 1, 3, and 5 of
the experiment or until the remaining phosphorus in wastewater
was lower than the standard guidelines from the U.S. EPA (1991),
which is 0.1 mgL1. After phosphorus of the wastewater was lower
than the standard guideline, the wastewater in the wetland systemswas
removed and new domestic wastewater was added to the
system for the new cycle. The experiment was run in 5 cycles.
