This technique for marbling fabric is based on the Japanese technique of suminagashi, which means "ink floating." It is generally done on paper or fabric and involves floating ink or paint on a thickened liquid base. I decided to give it a try with Rit dye and used shaving cream as the base. The liquid dye is applied to the shaving cream and then swirled with a comb or bamboo skewers made into a rake. Then fabric is laid down and gently pressed on the swirled dye. The dye transfers to the fabric and is then removed and heat set in the microwave. Since this was my first time to give it a try, I tested transferring the dye to both "dry" and "wet" fabric. The "wet" fabric produced darker, more intense colors. Marbling is best done on small pieces of fabric, which can be turned into napkins, coasters, scarves and fat quarters for quilt blocks.
