The values of these fractions are highly dependent on the way the query and the content of learning objects are presented [12]. In particular, with medicinal information it is turned out that user’s information need cannot be properly satisfied by keyword-based searching. To alleviate this problem we are developing a system, which extends the functionality of keyword-based search by browsing functionalities. The browsing, however, is not based on hyperlinks but rather on the relationships that occur in medicinal ontologies. Hence the medicinal ontology is visible (in a graphical form) for the users. This research is done in the Content Factory project (a joint project of Helsinki University and the Technical University of Helsinki), in which we are developing an experimental system for managing medicinal information. The rest of the paper is organized as follows. First, in Section 2, we give a motivating example of the restrictions of the keyword-based searching. Then, in Section 3, we illustrate what kinds of ontologies [13] we are using in order to improve the expression power of the queries focusing on medicinal information. Then, in Section 4 we discuss the role of RDF (Resource Description Framework) [14] in expressing the knowledge related to medicinal information. Finally, Section 5 concludes the paper by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of our approach.
