Mosby’s medical dictionary (2009) defines oral hygiene as
‘the condition or practice of maintaining the tissues and structures
of the mouth’. To differentiate between the condition
and the practice, ‘oral hygiene care’ will be used here to
denote the concept of interest, i.e. the practice of oral hygiene.
Oral hygiene care is an amalgam of the terms oral care and
oral hygiene and has been defined as ‘the prevention of plaque-related
diseases effected by disrupting plaque with the
mechanical action of brushing and flossing teeth or the use of
other oral hygiene aids’ (Pearson & Chalmers 2004, p. 68).
Oral hygiene care (also termed ‘oral care’ and ‘mouth
care’) is an everyday practice of nurses who care for dependent
older persons in hospitals and long-term care. However,
nurses may assign their own meaning to this nursing
intervention. They typically use their own judgement to
determine which oral hygiene care measures to offer and it
may be based on older, familiar practices, and a lack of
knowledge of the desired outcomes (Coleman & Watson
2006, Miegel & Wachtel 2009).
