The natural reward strategy involves the ability of the individual to find
satisfaction and intrinsic motivation not only in the outcome of the work, but also in the
process. The concept is synonymous with Cscikszentmihalyi's (1997) writings on finding
flow: "If work and relationships are able to provide flow, the quality of everyday life is
bound to improve. But there are no gimmicks, no easy shortcuts. It takes total
commitment to fully experience life" (p. 115). Natural reward strategy incorporates the
concept of intrinsic motivation. Research on intrinsic motivation demonstrates the
individual's ability to focus on a task for its own reward; channeling one's direction can
increase one's sense of purpose, motivation, competence, and self-control on the job
(Csikszentmihalyi, 1997; Deci & Ryan, 1985: Herzberg, Mausner, & Snyderman, 2003).
