The roles of sons and daughters were initially rather different. The daughters went straight into the trade. Khemthong, the first child and eldest daughter, quit school after the compulsory four years primary and worked in the family business. She opened the family's first retail outlet in a shophouse close to Chiang Mai's main Warorot market. Her two younger sisters, Jansom and Somjit, worked in the shop and later branched into managing the factory and wholesale silk trading, respectively. The sons, meanwhile, were given higher education. Of the first three, Sak went to army cadet school, Loet to Thammasat University, and Sujet to Chulalongkorn University.
