The classroom
Effective entry into class
It is important to create a positive well-structured environment right
from the start. Self-categorisation theory states that people strive to
conform to their representation of the group norm. Hence, based on this
theory, classroom behaviour can be established on the basis of what the
majority of the children are doing and how they are behaving.
The teacher needs to immediately establish respect in a calm, assertive
manner. Make clear that the classroom has set rules. This needs to be
practised every time the children enter the classroom, i.e. beginning of
school, after playtime.
