There is considerable evidence that the nutritive value of cereals and starches is enhanced for ruminants when the cereals or starches are gelatinized. In most reports, feeding trials have shown substantial improvement in feed conversion when the starch portion of the total ration has been gelatinized. As early as 1996, it was shown that extrusion cooking of only 30% of the grain portion of a ration fed to sheep at Kansas State University (Menzies et al., 1996) apparently brought about an average 13.46% improvement in feed conversion over the control diet.
