► Bioremediation of an aged PAH-contaminated soil with a bacterial consortium. ► 35.8% of PAHs were removed with the addition of 20% of the consortium after 56 days. ► Sphingobacteria and Proteobacteria were the dominant groups with PCR–DGGE analysis.
