Table 1 presents summary statistics by insurance status for sub-jects in the sample Gallup collected during our 16-day window (werestrict the sample to individuals under 65 as this older group iseligible for Medicare). Though we focus on the uninsured in mostof the later analysis, it is useful to consider how much this groupdiffers from the insured and especially from those insured via anemployer plan. In general, the uninsured in our data are youngerand more likely to be male, consistent with past survey data (see,e.g., Cheong et al., 2007). Those with employer insurance have fam-ily income 2.25 times that of the uninsured and are nearly twiceas likely to be married. Importantly, the uninsured are 2.6 times aslikely as those with employer insurance to have been denied healthinsurance in the past.
